Opportunities to help your community.
If you are native to the Village of Howards Grove or if you are new to our community, we welcome you. Howards Grove is a great community which is made up of mostly housing. The location is in close proximity to larger communities which gives many people the opportunity for employment within the area. If you came from a larger municipality, the fire protection and EMS service may have been provided to you by paid or paid on call individuals.
With Howards Grove being a small community, we rely on volunteers for its Fire Department and EMS service.
The department is broken down into two categories:
Patron and Active
A Patron members pays a modest annual dues to the fire department corporation.
Active members are individuals who provide emergency services to the community.
Active members make up three separate classifications:
#1 Firefighters
Firefighters respond to fires participate in fire prevention activities, fire inspections, use extrication tools (like jaws of life), fire truck maintenance and fund raisers.
They meet the first and third Monday’s of each month at 7:00 P.M. The following Tuesday morning there is a meeting for the different shift workers at 8:45 A.M.
Different meeting times allow any resident to make a meeting regardless of personal work schedules.
#2 First Responders
First Responders respond to medical emergencies and auto accidents. Their goal is to be the first trained medical emergency personnel on the scene to provide basic care to patients before the transporting ambulance arrives.
They meet the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 P.M. The following Tuesday morning there is a meeting for the different shift workers at 8:45 A.M. This allows any resident to attend a meeting regardless of personal work schedules.
First Responders also participate in fund raisers and other department functions.
#3 Fire Corps
Fire Corps members respond and give support to Firefighters and/or First Responders at large or lengthy events. This could be aiding with rehab, providing food over meal times and cool water to hydrate personnel on a hot day, etc. They also help with the fire prevention program and the raising of funds to help support the organization.
